Create a coupon

Make a discount code customers type on the cart or checkout page, with its own amount, dates, spend limits and usage caps.

A coupon is a discount code your customers type on your store's cart or checkout page. You choose how much it takes off, which products it works on, when it is valid and how many times it can be used.

Before you start

  • You need the permission Manage marketing. Store Owners and Admins have it. Managers and Staff don't have it by default.
  • For a free-shipping coupon, first add a delivery option with Free shipping — only with a coupon ticked in Settings → Delivery Charges. That option stays hidden at checkout until the customer applies a coupon with free shipping.

Steps

8 steps · ~6 min

  1. Step 1

Go to Operations → Coupons and click Add coupon.
  2. Step 2

Under Coupon code, type the Code customers will enter, for example EID20. Use 3–40 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores. It is not case-sensitive.
  3. Step 3

If you like, add a Description. Your team sees it in the coupon list, and customers see it next to the code on their cart.
  4. Step 4

In the General tab, choose the Discount type and enter the Coupon amount. Turn on Allow free shipping if the coupon should also unlock free delivery.
  5. Step 5

Still in General, set a Start date and an Expiry date if the coupon should only work for a while.
  6. Step 6

In the Usage restriction tab, set any spend limits and choose which products or categories get the discount.
  7. Step 7

In the Usage limits tab, set how many times the coupon can be used in total and by each customer.
  8. Step 8

Read the Summary on the right, check that Status is Enabled, and click Create coupon.

Discount types

  • Percentage discount: a percentage off every eligible item. The amount can be at most 100.
  • Fixed cart discount: one fixed amount off the whole cart (or only its eligible items).
  • Fixed product discount: a fixed amount off each eligible item, per unit.

A coupon needs an amount above 0, unless it gives free shipping.

Restrictions and limits

  • Start date and Expiry date: the coupon works from the start of the start date to the end of the expiry date. Leave the start empty to make it usable right away, and the expiry empty for no expiry.
  • Minimum spend: the cart subtotal must be at least this.
  • Maximum spend: the coupon stops working above this cart subtotal.
  • Maximum discount: the coupon never takes off more than this. Useful for percentage coupons.
  • Individual use only: the coupon can't be used together with other coupons. This is on for new coupons.
  • Exclude sale items: no discount on items that already have an offer price.
  • Products and Categories: only these get the discount. Leave both empty for all products. Exclude products and Exclude categories never get it. A product or category can't be both included and excluded.
  • Usage limit per coupon: how many times the coupon can be used in total, by everyone. Leave empty for unlimited.
  • Usage limit per customer: how many times one customer can use it. Customers are told apart by their phone number.

How customers use a coupon

  • On the cart page, the customer types the code under Coupon code and clicks Apply. On the checkout page and in the Buy now popup, they click Have a coupon code? first.
  • The discount shows straight away. If the code can't be used, the customer sees why, for example "This coupon has expired." or "Spend at least ৳1,000 to use this coupon."
  • Up to 5 coupons can be used together, as long as none of them is Individual use only.
  • When the order is placed, the coupon is checked again, this time with the customer's phone number for the per-customer limit. If it no longer works, the order is not placed and the customer sees the reason.
  • In the order, the coupon code is shown under Discount with the amount it took off.
